Personnel Responsibilities
Develop assigned Manufacturing Technician(s)
Determine employees’ career goals and required development areas using a succession planning process.
- Use the Quarterly Performance Review process to help employees’ career development and complete their portion of the company’s objectives.
- Meet with employee(s) 1:1 monthly to track progress on their career development and meet with them daily to track progress on company objectives.
- Provide quarterly and annual reviews to Technicians; reward appropriately and manage non-performers out of the organization.
- Ensure employee(s) have clear and concise job descriptions, written processes, and the required training so the department can execute properly.
- Communicate the vision of the manufacturing cell and its role in the company vision.
- Reward employees by managing incentive programs that support continuous improvement.
- Ensure HR policies are complied with employees issues are handled.
- As necessary work with HR to help hire Technicians.
- Manage the time card system for employee(s).
- Ensure Safety and Emergency Response policies are followed and metrics posted.
Department Responsibilities
Through early involvement in Product Development support efforts to smoothly and successfully transfer projects into a manufacturing cell by:
- Coordinating agreement with the Program Manager on production yield and productivity goals required for PD disengagement. Work with Design and Process Engineers to help meet productivity and yield goals and ensure a smooth transfer into Production. Ensure process knowledge is transferred prior to PD disengagement.
- Coordinating with process engineering and tooling on any new equipment.
- Work with the Cell Team to help ensure that the culture of the manufacturing cell is focused on the understanding of the customers’ needs.
- Ensure the production line receives top priority in order to meet or exceed customer expectations. Unless specifically prohibited by a client, Manufacturing Engineers should specifically:
- Attend a daily meeting on the line with the Cell Team, to review the previous days production, any issues, and projected activities (including who is responsible for the action item and when will it be completed).
- Ensure all Manufacturing Engineering and Technician assigned responsibilities are completed in a timely manner.
- Review the visual production board several times daily for issues related to productivity, downtime, equipment issues, and scrap.
- Understand the scrap issues on the line. Pareto the scrap issues and with the Cell Team to create action plans to drive down scrap.
- Work with the Cell Team to help them improve processes, parts flow, balance issues, equipment issues, etc. to constantly improve productivity.
- Provide associates clear manufacturing instructions and standards of work to drive improvements in the quality of the products. Ensure actual associate work is reflected in manufacturing documentation.
- Assist the Line Lead on ensuring all Associates are trained appropriately for their work stations.
- Ensure the Line layout encourages minimal WIP and emphasizes continuous flow.
- Ensure equipment and line is validated, qualified, and calibrated. Support Maintenance to ensure that the equipment is maintained in a manner that maximizes equipment life and performance and minimizes impact to production.
- Encourage the associates and the engineering support staff to aggressively capture and act on line scrap.
- Encourage the manufacturing associates and supporting staff to continually drive process improvements.
- Ensure that the require production paperwork is accurate and available for production.
- Support all non-standard builds.
- Work with the Cell Team to ensure non-standard builds have minimal impact to production.
- Ensure all required paperwork is complete prior to builds.
- Ensure enough technical support is present on the line during builds to help speed the process and minimize confusion.
- Work with the Cell Team to ensure the appropriate material is present on the line.
- Attend a daily meeting on the line with the Cell Team, to review the previous days production, any issues, and projected activities (including who is responsible for the action item and when will it be completed).
Improve Quality. Focus on product, process, and paperwork quality by incorporating the following activities:
-
- Encourage each associate to understand their obligation to produce products that meet or exceed product specifications.
- Encourage the production lines to be compliant with all applicable Quality policies and regulations.
- Ensure process improvements are implemented to increase product quality.
- Support the Quality Engineer towards identification of root causes of manufacturing issues. If a CAPA is issued support the efforts to ensure the item is closed in an appropriate amount of time.
- Support the Quality Engineer(s) presentation of customer complaint data and actions to the production line associates.
- Provide the Quality organization with information to ensure that all raw material quality issues are being addressed with the appropriate vendor and that quality is improving.
- Support efforts to manage material in a lean manner. Specific actions include:
- Notify the Purchasing to make them aware of any actual or projected unusual changes in material use.
- Work with Purchasing to anticipate materials needs or obsolescence as Document Change Requests are processed.
- Participate in a periodic cross-cell manufacturing meeting to ensure that lessons learned and resources are transferred appropriately across the organization.
- Work with the Cell Team to anticipate any line or equipment needs as client demand change.
- Work with the other support staff of the Manufacturing Cells to minimize the time required to process Engineering Change Orders.
- Support environmental program by having Manufacturing Technicians assist with particulate counts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Assign work to technicians, less experienced engineers and temporary employees as needed.
- Mentor less-experienced manufacturing engineers and technicians
- Oversee and assist in the selection of outside vendors and consultants as required.
- Provide leadership and direction on project teams as it relates to the manufacturing engineering functions.
- Provide leadership and direction for process and business improvements.
